Even though our Hurricane season officially runs from June through November, it’s important to prepare for severe weather conditions year-round. Follow these guidelines to prepare before, during, and after the storm.
Before the Storm
- Create an emergency plan for yourself and your loved ones. Be sure to include preparations for your pets, livestock, and recreational equipment such as boats, RVs, and ATVs.
- Prepare your Hurricane Safety Kit. Store the supplies and personal documents in airtight plastic bags and inside easy-to-carry containers.
- Stock up on water, non-perishable foods, necessary medical supplies, and prescriptions.
- Know your Evacuation zone, Flood zone, and Shelter locations.
- Learn about the different Emergency Alert systems and determine if your phone settings allow these alerts.
- Reduce possible hazards inside and outside the home.
- Maintain a half level of gas in your vehicle’s tank during hurricane season.
During the Storm – Sheltering in Place
- Stay inside, stay safe, and stay put!
- If necessary, take refuge in interior hallways, smaller rooms, and away from windows.
- Have working flashlights, lamps, and fire extinguishers nearby.
- Maintain clear paths and points of exit in case of emergency.
- Wait until local officials give the all-clear before venturing outside.
After the Storm
- Stay out of floodwater if on foot or by vehicle.
- Do not handle electrical equipment in wet areas.
- Report broken or fallen utilities to the correct authorities.
- Avoid using candles if the power is out.
- Never use a generator indoors or in a garage. Keep it dry and 20 feet away from windows, doors, vents, and A/C units.
- Stay away from power lines.
- Only drink safe water and food. When in doubt, throw it out!
- Clean up your home and yard safely.
- Depending on circumstances, you may be able to apply for FEMA Assistance.
