For hundreds of years, Dentists have cared for our smiles, so it’s time to return the favor! On March 6th, or any day you would like to, you can celebrate National Dentist Day to honor, thank, and show appreciation for dentists everywhere.
The earliest evidence of dentistry spanned the years 7000 BC to 5000 BC, and in ancient Greece, both Hippocrates and Aristotle wrote about dentistry. However, it wasn’t until the 1700s that dentistry became recognized as a specific profession.
In 1723, French surgeon Pierre Fauchard, known as the “father of modern dentistry,” wrote his influential book, The Surgeon Dentist, which is considered the first scientific book that addressed a comprehensive system for caring for and treating teeth. The first dental college, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, opened in 1840. In 1859 the American Dental Association (ADA) was formed as the profession required more organization and oversight.
