Since 1776, Americans have celebrated their country’s independence on July 4th with cookouts, parades, fireworks, and time spent at the beach. However, many people today are unaware that July 2nd was when the Second Continental Congress had a near-unanimous official vote in favor of independence from Great Britain. Not until July 4th did the Continental Congress formally adopt the Declaration of Independence. The U.S. Congress declared July 4th a federal holiday in 1870.
As you are outside celebrating America’s 247th birthday, be sure to protect your body’s largest organ – your skin! Be Sun Smart and reduce your risk of skin cancer by following these tips:
- Seek Shade between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun is the strongest
- Pay attention to the UV Index for your current location
- Cover up with clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses
- Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher (check expiration dates)
- Apply sunscreen to your neck, ears, and feet; use lip balm & lipstick containing sunscreen
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating
- Be careful around water, sand, and concrete since these surfaces reflect the sun’s rays
- Be aware if your medications cause sensitivity to the sun, increasing your risk of sunburn
